Roman Halloween Costumes – Gladiator or Slave?   by Sue Henderson

Roman Halloween costumes are exceptionally easy to make for yourself when you start to panic now that the season of Halloween is almost upon us once again, and you can’t decide on what costume to wear. You can easily make a short tunic for yourself which was the garment favoured by men, while the women wore it down to her ankles.

Ancient Rome must have been an amazing city to see with fabulous architecture on every corner. The Colosseum begun in AD72 upon the site of an old lake which was then drained. It was a costly affair both in money and lives. The fighting was nothing short of mass slaughter, with animals as well as men in combat against each other.

Taking eight years to build, this great structure completed in 80 BC on the order of the Emperor Vespasion. It had seating for a massive 50,000 capacity, just imagine the noise and the smell! Sadly it stands as somewhat of a ruin due to stone thieves over the centuries and earthquakes, yet still remains an iconic structure.

We all recognise the Colosseum as the theatre where Gladiators were on show, fighting with little hope of winning although those of them who fought well were perhaps rewarded with their freedom, if the crowd loved them, and they fought hard. For those men who showed fear or did not come up to the crowd expectations, a whipping would be ordered until they did better!

A Gladiator costume with a sword and shield to accessorize your look could well be your wish this Halloween, or perhaps you prefer being the Emperor himself? Why not choose a costume and become the mighty Caesar for the evening. Your partner might agree on being a humble slave girl, there are some amazing Roman Halloween costumes for slave girls. The blood lusting Romans almost slaughtered the tiger and the elephant to extinction when in around AD 523 wild animals were forbidden from the arena of the Colosseum. Using Roman law as a tool, thieves and other persona non Grata were then entered in to the field to stand without any way of defending themselves against the animals.

An opportunity to make some cash missed by the Emperor when entrance in to the arena was free. The populace had to show a card, as the powers that be were very keen on the correct seating arrangements being observed.

The Vestal Virgins had the best seats of all, right by the Emperor himself! That might be a brilliant suggestion for a Roman costume for your partner?
